Toward Gas System Decommissioning

We’re thrilled to share good news: yesterday the California Energy Commission invested new funds in Gridworks to advance the transition of the California gas system toward a clean energy future.

Together with our partners at E3, East Bay Community Energy, and Pacific Gas & Electric, Gridworks will engage leading stakeholders to identify opportunities and barriers to tactical decommissioning of portions of Pacific Gas and Electric Company’s gas system, and to assess community priorities and potential paths forward on electrification and tactical gas decommissioning in up to three proposed pilot locations in East Bay Community Energy’s service territory.

This project will continue Gridworks’ leadership in preparing gas systems for a low carbon future. In 2019 Gridworks catalyzed the issues with California’s Gas System in Transition, a paper which brought new focus to the challenges facing disadvantaged customers as rates rise in response to declining gas use. In 2020 Gridworks published Gas Resource and Infrastructure Planning, a follow-up piece recommending an integrated gas system planning framework.

With support from the grant, Gridworks will be proactively promoting insights gained as this project unfolds between August 2021 and July 2023. We encourage you to follow along through this newsletter, our LinkedIn feed, and blog.

Finally, this project is the sort of amazing initiative our new Director will have the opportunity to lead. If you share our excitement for opportunities like these, apply now by sending a cover letter and resume to info@gridworks.org.
