Final Report Of The California Joint Agencies Vehicle Grid Integration (VGI) Working Group

To realize its vision of a carbon-neutral economy, California has set a target of 5 million zero-emission vehicles on the road and 250,000 charging ports in service by 2030.  This ambitious target creates an enormous opportunity at the intersection of transportation and the power sector: transportation charged by reliable renewable energy. 

This year Gridworks catalyzed that opportunity with its leadership of the California Vehicle Grid Integration Working Group. The Working Group was made up of diverse representatives of VGI stakeholders, including state agencies, utilities, community choice aggregators, the California ISO, electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers, battery manufacturers, charging network and energy service providers, advocacy and research groups, industry associations, and ratepayer interest groups. Gridworks facilitated the Working Group’s collaboration and created its Final Report.

The outcomes of the initiative were substantial and groundbreaking. Highlights include:

• Development of a foundational VGI use case assessment framework and methodology that defines and evaluates over 2,500 potential VGI use cases;
• Identification of use cases with the greatest potential benefits for customers adopting EVs and society as a whole, including light-, medium- and heavy-duty vehicles; and
• Policy recommendations, critical to unlocking customer benefits of EV ownership while advancing decarbonization of the power sector.

Spurred by the recommendations of this diverse group, California can become a global leader in vehicle grid integration, showing how to achieve deep decarbonization of the power and transportation sectors together.
